Art Journal Monday- Burst of Yellow Warmth

art journal monday, January sunshine

For those of you that have never visited North Texas in the winter time, lucky you. I don’t make a habit of hating the weather- of all the things to waste energy on – but while i’ve come around to the frankly astonishingly temperamental weather patterns here in this lovely corner of the US of A, the winter time takes the cake. These past 2 weeks have been filled with heat and sunshine, thunderstorms, sleet and flurries of snow, humid rain and more cold snaps than anyone could count.

With that in mind, finding a sunny weekend afternoon to devote to art projects was an unexpected joy and I made the most it before I succumbed to laziness and the need to lounge on the couch.

Ambitions/Projects for this Week:
-Catching up on my snailmail (couple of posts coming up on that later on) and spending my lunch hours at work scribbling travel wishes to friends

– Re-writing a good chunk of my first effort at a modern fantasy novel, the Ocean Is Spilling. Which at this point is just me clicking around multiple screens on my laptop/display furiously and talking to myself in the car a lot.

– Finished up my Bastille inspired art piece (lyrics from their song “The Anchor” ) and sketching out some rough drafts of my next topography mountains piece

– Find a way to motivate myself to get my weekly workouts up from 2 a week to at least 4 (eventually the goal is to get up to 6 a week plus two extra on the weekends…this is perhaps a bit much for a person who still regularly takes the elevator up to the second floor instead of taking the stairs but hey, dream big yeah?)

Progress on the whole “reading more fiction books in 2017” thing:
Since last year I read literally zero fiction books, preferring instead to drown myself in travel guides and economics, I decided to make it a resolution for myself to read more of them this year. That goal is…not going so great. So far out of the 4 books/graphic novels I had set myself to read for this month, i’ve only read Volume 4 of the Fables comic series by Bill Willingham and gone about a third of the way through The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins. I still have Volume 5 of Fables and the Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman to read this month but unless I find the motivation to get through the Girl on the Train, not sure how likely it will be to finish those as well.

Art Journal Monday- What Do You Dream About These Days?

 Slytherin themed artjournal pages

What are your dreams, when you dream- if you dream- what do they resemble? What shapes do they take?

I dream of saints and mountains and the golden flow of time. Those with bruised, dirty feet covered by heavy cloth, mini swirls of dust teased up by the movement of their path. I dream of outer space; the known exciting possibilities and established hard scientific rules….and smash them together with dreams of the fantastical and thoroughly unknown and almost impossible. I lose time on thoughts of deep and dark forests, the peaks of powdery mountains unfurling endlessly in the distance, and the sensation of tiny waves passing over and over at my feet as I stand up against the fury of a nameless ocean with my hands utterly empty at my sides.

Sometimes when I close my eyes, I can see notes of music flow underneath my hands as I pass them over the cold keys of my neglected keyboard, sounds both known and not coming apart underneath my fingertips, their composition disintegrating just as they reach completion in someones ears. Colors splash like blood spatter against paper when I trail my hands over my art supplies, and in my head it’s all an endless parade of anything goes and the laws of what is physically possibly by hand do not apply.

Dreams are so nonsensical- until they’re not and then when they make sense, you wonder if you can trust anything at all. They’re hard to explain, and even harder to make into any kind of reality and it’s so easy to get lost in them, the purity they hold so different from waking life.

What are your non-sensical dreams made up of, what basic building blocks of components do they share, if any?

An Upheaval, Bring The Paper Boats- Thoughts on Inspiration

paper boats, we float

“Even paper boats float, given enough faith.”

What brings you inspiration? That seems to be the most commonly tossed question at artists/artistically minded people. And sometimes people have intricately lovely answers, something they can point to with consistency. The love of their family perhaps, the landscape of their homeland, their own personal scars and memories. These kinds of slow burn inspiration points that propel like a gentle wind towards more and more and more.

Hello! says the hand drawn dinosaur hi-fructose and vogue Given the inspiration, whats yours?

Other times it seems to be constantly fluctuating mediums like music, movies, books, theater and other forms of art all around, old or new.Taking from one to give to the other, being inspired by art of all kinds all around, it’s a commonly sited point of inspiration for so many kinds of artists and performers, and of course that makes sense. No man is an island after all, most especially not creatives.

Perhaps more volatile ever changing things as well, like current political climates and world events, the fervor that bites beneath each and every major city all around the world, these as well can be seen as the key ignition in so many works. Gigantic space and time, the smaller bites of life joined with the unending past and sewn in with the ever expanding future, so many things big or small and what a question to try and answer no?

“What inspires you.”

You might as well ask someone why they go on living each day, really, because you’d probably get about the same answer either way. Either a passionate response…or the shrug of a shoulder.

The things that inspire me fade and change with time, they burn into my eyes and lungs with an energy I can’t deny till that energy is spent and i’ve moved on towards other things that will create that maddening midnight addition under my skin again to create-create-create and the only thing I can tell you with certainty about any of the things that have and will inspire me is that they can come from anywhere and combine to create anything, abstract and concrete alike :

historical lectures on wandering marauders- a single line of poetry caught in a flash scrawled across a private notebook-the way a stranger looked hunched over their phone like their life had just been splintered in half- a particularly great episode of a usually mediocre tv show- the way it felt to get your heart broken at 16 and think you would never recover- tasting real hot buttered southern style biscuits for the first time at 3am in the backseat of a speeding car- the architecture magazine picked up on a whim- that novel currently sitting at #1 on the NYT bestseller list that is so very cliche but damn if it isn’t compelling- that one thing that happens all the time at your day job that happens only to you and you want to explain it to the world- that song you put on repeat for hours on end trying to fall into that feeling over and over- the feeling of helplessness watching the news roll in at night and knowing your breath is a priceless gift given freely today- the wild windswept landscape that i’ll never again see again with my own eyes but my mind will always remember- the taste of blood when biting back angry words- the flash in the sky that inspires you to think of other worlds, other galaxies, infinite space and infinite possibilities….

What inspires you? Can’t help but think there should be no easy answer to that.

Hans Zimmer and Inspiration

You know whats great for inspiration? To get you right out of the unfortunate dumps?

Hans Zimmer.

Seriously. At least for me, the best thing to do when my brains rotting from lackluster ideas and seeping slowly towards decay, that’s when I plunk myself down and blast some heavenly Zimmer tracks. That well known Pirates of the Caribbean theme song is great for engendering an “I can conquer empires!” feeling, while anything from Interstellar is fantastic for crushing your heart to dust and then reviving it towards greater emotion. Want something a little moodier but still inspiring? A track from The Dark Knight Rises would be what you’re looking for perhaps, though the Man of Steel score can capture your lungs in it’s fists and punch them towards the skies just as well. And of course, lets not forget most anything from Inception, though most especially Time, that heart-achingly beautiful triumph of the human spirit that starts like a sunrise in your veins and tears itself out as a cry from your mouth.

My most favorite tracks to dive my mind under, the tones that always bring me back to the light when things are just a little too dark and vulnerable, would be the last three songs from GladiatorElysium, Honor Him and Now We Are Free .There’s something about all three in succession that just grips me and raises me the depths of any perdition.

AC/DC, the Backstreet Boys, Eric Clapton, Beyoncé, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Crystal Fighters, M83, U2, Daft Punk, Florence + the Machine, these are some of the great artists that I find myself turning to when I need a bit of a boost to my mood, a jumpstart to my day- but when in the true dumps of things, Hans Zimmer is what I fall to so I can be shattered and remade again in better form.

Favorite tracks:

Where We’re Going- Interstellar Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
One Day- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World End
Strength and Honor- Gladiator, Music From The Motion Picture
Look To The Stars- Man Of Steel, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Rise- The Dark Knight Rises
Time- Inception (Music From The Motion Picture)
Elysium- Gladiator, Music From The Motion Picture
Mountains- Interstellar Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

I just finished having a truly epic sneezing fit, have made myself half-sick from eating too many Cadbury chocolate pieces and am currently writing this post whilst lying on my floor, so I can better hide from the gardener guy outside, who’s been tasked with the Herculean job of taming my houses wretched front and back yard.

So, it’s a good day all in all is what i’m saying.
